Shopping and Malls – Explore Colombia: Top Shopping Havens & Unmissable Malls Guide

Hello everyone! I’m Nicholas, an American living in the vibrant city of Bogotá, Colombia. Today, I’m excited to share with you some of the city’s most incredible shopping destinations, perfect for finding unique items and souvenirs.

Shopping and Malls

Pasaje Rivas: A Historical Marketplace

Imagine a place where history and commerce blend seamlessly. That’s Pasaje Rivas for you! This marketplace, over 120 years old, sits in the heart of San Victorino. It’s a treasure trove of Colombian crafts and souvenirs. You’ll find clay cups, basketry, ceramics, and much more. The variety is astounding, offering everything from wicker home goods to quintessential Colombian keepsakes like fridge magnets and flags. Remember, the maze-like layout is part of its charm – don’t hesitate to haggle for the best deals!

Open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
Located at Carrera 10 with Calle 10

Pasaje Hernández: A Glimpse into Bogotá’s Past

Step back in time at Pasaje Hernández, inaugurated in 1918. This shopping center was a commercial innovation of its time, offering a range of products to suit all budgets. While it may not be the primary shopping destination it once was, its architectural charm and historical significance make it worth a visit. Wander through its two-level, L-shaped layout and capture the essence of old Bogotá in your photographs.

Find it in downtown Bogotá, between streets 12 and 13 and races 8 and 9.

San Alejo Flea Market: A Sunday Extravaganza

Every Sunday, the Carrera Séptima cycleway transforms into a bustling flea market – the San Alejo Flea Market. It’s a festival of music, drinks, and sports, alongside a plethora of shopping options. Here, you can find affordable clothing, unique souvenirs, antiques, and wooden crafts. It’s a must-visit for those seeking a lively and authentic Colombian shopping experience.

Located at Carrera 7 #24-70

Emerald Center of Bogotá: A Gemstone Haven

The trade of emeralds is big in Bogotá, especially around Avenida Jiménez. For beginners, the variety can be overwhelming. To avoid pitfalls, avoid street purchases and head to reputable stores. My top recommendation is the International Emerald Center, located on Av. Jiménez with Carrera 5. Here, you’ll find certified emeralds and reliable currency exchange services.

Emerald Buying Tips for Beginners

Emeralds can be shaped with or without facets. The final price depends on the gem’s weight, shape, color, and clarity. You can find smaller, quality gems from around $40-70 or larger, more expensive ones priced at $300-400 per carat. The key is to find a piece that speaks to you, both in beauty and price.
