Rosario Islands – Explore Islas del Rosario: Colombia’s Hidden Gem for Food & Adventure!

Hello, fellow travelers! It’s Nicholas here, your American friend living in Colombia. Today, I’m excited to share with you the wonders of the Rosario Islands, a part of Cartagena de Indias’ insular area. These islands are a true representation of the magical Caribbean Sea of Colombia .

Rosario Islands

️ The Rosario and San Bernardo Coral Islands

Imagine over 120,000 hectares of Natural National Park forming one of the most stunning archipelagos in the Caribbean. Located about 35 kilometers southwest of Cartagena, these islands are a small paradise, each with its own unique charm. The best part? They are just a boat ride away!

How to Reach the Rosario Islands

Reaching these islands is an adventure in itself! The primary mode of transport is by sea. Most visitors opt for a tour from the tourist pier at La Bodeguita, offering a comprehensive exploration of the area. Alternatively, you can head to Playa Blanca and hop on a kayak or jet ski tour for a more personal experience of the islands.

️ Rosario Islands Tours

Boats to the Rosario Islands depart from La Bodeguita Pier between 8 and 9 AM daily, returning to Cartagena around 5-6 PM. Whether you choose a larger, more comfortable boat or a smaller, faster one, you’ll follow a route showcasing the islands’ beauty. This includes passing by Bocagrande and Bocachica, the forts of San Fernando and San José, and culminating at San Martín de Pajarales Island. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing swim and visit the PNN aquarium.

The journey then continues to Playa Blanca on Barú Island, where you’ll have a few hours to swim, snack, or dine at local restaurants.

Isla Grande and Isla del Rosario

These two are the largest islands in the archipelago, boasting various accommodations, from resorts and hotels to star-lit hammocks. They are perfect for overnight visitors, offering direct transfers from the pier.

️ Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca beautifully reflects the duality of tourism. It’s a picturesque spot with white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, lined with bars and restaurants. However, be mindful of the vendors – not everything is a bargain. For snorkeling enthusiasts, nearby reefs offer a glimpse into the vibrant marine life. The local cuisine, featuring dishes like fried fish with coconut rice and patacones, is a must-try!

Tips for Your Visit

  • Travel light but prepared. Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water – it’s expensive on the islands.
  • If you’re budget-conscious, bring your own food. A sandwich and some fruit can go a long way.
  • Always inquire about prices before buying anything. Feel free to bargain or refuse if it seems too high.
  • For an immersive experience, bring a waterproof camera.
  • To avoid crowds, try not to visit Playa Blanca on peak days.
  • Consider mosquito repellent if staying overnight on the islands.

Final Thoughts: The Rosario Islands are a breathtaking destination, deserving of your bucket list. While some islands are private, accessible only by paying a premium, the standard boat tour offers an enjoyable experience, albeit with limited stops. For those seeking a more authentic experience, starting at Playa Blanca and exploring from there might be the way to go.
