Hello fellow travelers! I’m Nicholas, an American living in the heart of Colombia, and I’m here to guide you through some of the most breathtaking experiences in this vibrant country. Today, let’s talk about a gem in Bogotá that’s a must-visit!
Monserrate: A Bogotá Treasure
Perched at a lofty 3,200 meters amidst the lush Andino forest, Monserrate is a beacon of beauty and history. This site offers some of the most spectacular views of the capital, making it a prime spot for both locals and travelers.
A Cultural Icon
Monserrate is more than just a destination; it’s an integral part of Bogotá’s culture. From miracle-seeking locals to curious tourists and fitness enthusiasts, everyone finds a piece of magic here. There’s a saying here, “If you haven’t been to Monserrate with your significant other, you haven’t truly experienced the heart of Bogotá.”
History of Monserrate
In the quest for divine protection, Spanish settlers in the 17th century erected crosses on Monserrate. This led to the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Monserrat, Catalonia’s patroness. With humble resources and community support, small stone hermitages and rest areas were built along the path, some of which still stand.
Over time, the site evolved into a sanctuary, with monks from various orders fostering devotion to the Virgin, later replaced by veneration for the Señor Caído de Monserrate, sculpted by the Colombian artist Pedro de Lugo.
Myth and Legend
Monserrate is also a land of legends. One such tale is the ‘Stiff Foot’ of the Señor Caído statue, believed to have stiffened to avoid a sinner’s kiss. Another is the fabled Golden Deer, worshipped by the Muisca leader, Zipa, and hidden in the mountains, promising untold riches.
Planning Your Visit
For the best experience, I recommend visiting on a sunny day or at dusk when the city lights up like a starry blanket. The main attractions include the revered image of Señor Caído and the stunning city views from the lookout points.
Getting There
You have three choices: the funicular, the cable car (both at the same price with discounts on Sundays), or hiking up the trail. The funicular, with a 1 km journey through a hand-carved tunnel, is an experience in itself!
The Trail to Monserrate
Ready for a challenge? About 1500 steps lead up to the summit. The trail, having undergone major reconstructions, is now comfortably accessible. However, be prepared for a strenuous climb due to the high altitude and steep slopes. Remember to take it slow and stay hydrated!
Hours and Prices
The funicular and cable car operate at various hours throughout the week, with different rates for daytime and nighttime trips. Prices are affordable, with special rates on Sundays. The funicular, for example, costs 15,400 COP for a round trip on weekdays.
