Hello fellow nature enthusiasts! I’m Nicholas, an American living in the heart of Colombia, and today I’m excited to share with you an incredible gem – Bioparque Los Ocarros. This park is a must-visit for anyone eager to immerse themselves in Colombia’s unique wildlife and lush vegetation, particularly in the Meta region.
Why Visit Bioparque Los Ocarros?
Located just three kilometers from Villavicencio, the capital of Meta, Bioparque Los Ocarros is a sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of the native flora and fauna of the Colombian Llanos. This park is not just any wildlife center; it’s a vibrant gateway to the wonders of Los Llanos’ natural world.
Meet the Ocarro: The Giant Armadillo
The park’s namesake, the Ocarro or Giant Armadillo, is a fascinating creature native to this region. These mammals, also known as gurres grandes or tatú carreta, are not just found in Colombia but also in neighboring countries like Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Brazil. As you walk through the park, you’ll see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat and even as statues at the entrance!
Exploring the Park
The park’s layout is centered around a serene lake and is divided into six sections, including an aquarium and a serpentarium. The first four areas showcase the Llanos’ iconic birds like macaws, parrots, and toucans, alongside other regional wildlife such as turtles, crocodiles, caimans, pumas, tapirs, jaguars, and ocelots. And here’s a fun fact: according to the park guides, tapirs have the largest genitalia relative to their size in the animal kingdom !
The Serpentarium and Aquarium
For those who dare, the serpentarium is a thrilling experience, featuring false corals, rattlesnakes, loras, and four-nosed snakes. Over in the aquarium, which is one of Colombia’s largest, you’ll be mesmerized by the diverse freshwater fish from the Orinoquía region, including neon tetras, cardinals, piranhas, giant catfish, and cachamas.
Practical Information
Bioparque Los Ocarros offers daily guided tours and activities for large groups.
