Las Lajas Sanctuary: A Colombian Wonder

Recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Colombia, this awe-inspiring structure is nestled in the canyon of the Guáitara River. Though it’s off the beaten path, its architectural splendor and spiritual significance make it a must-visit destination.

Architectural Marvel in the Guáitara Canyon

The basilica, set in the stunning Guáitara Canyon in the town of Ipiales, near Potosí, and the Ecuadorian border, is part of Nariño department. A testament to architectural genius, it’s a site that combines natural beauty with human craftsmanship.

️ The Making of a Masterpiece

The Las Lajas Sanctuary, often hailed as one of the most beautiful sanctuaries globally, was designed by architects J. Gualberto Pérez of Ecuador and Lucindo Espinosa of Colombia, starting in January 1916. It succeeded three earlier temples built in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Legend of the Virgin of Las Lajas

In 1754, a local Indigenous woman, María Meneses, took shelter in a small cave here during a storm. This was where the Virgin first appeared, marking the beginning of numerous miracles and making Las Lajas a revered site.

Exploring the Sanctuary

The sanctuary, perched about 50 meters above the river, is not just a marvel from the outside. Inside, its stone wall backdrop and a thank-you plaque to the Otavalo people of Ecuador, who supplied the marble, add to its allure.

Pilgrimage and Local Culture

Both Colombians and Ecuadorians flock here, especially during peak pilgrimage times. The region’s Andean culture is palpable, with local food stalls offering delicacies like choclo con queso, humitas, and more along the descent to the temple.

A Tour of the Sanctuary

Surrounding the sanctuary, you’ll find bustling shops and services enhancing your visit. Keep an eye out for colorful plastic containers used to collect holy water from the Angel’s fountain.

️ Rituals and Wishes

Join in the tradition of lighting a candle at the altar, making a wish, and contributing to the colorful wax tapestry on the ground.
