Understanding Colombia’s Weather
Colombia’s climate is predominantly warm, tropical, and slightly humid. However, this varies significantly across different regions. From the cool and rainy capital of Bogotá to the spring-like weather of Medellín, and the sunny beaches of Cartagena, Colombia offers a diverse climatic experience.
Regional Weather Guide
- Bogotá: Mostly cold and wet throughout the year, with sunny spells from late December to February.
- Medellín: Known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’, it enjoys pleasant weather, though evenings can be cool. The driest months are from December to March.
- Eje Cafetero: This region boasts moderate weather and rainfall, with the heaviest rains in April, May, October, and November.
- Cartagena: Ideal weather from November to March, though it gets rainier in April, May, and particularly in October. But, the warmth and vibrant atmosphere are constant!
- Cali: Great weather from November to March, with a wetter period in April and May. A year-round destination for sure!
- Amazonas: Heaviest rains from December to February, making March to November the best time to explore this magnificent region.
- San Andrés and Providencia: These islands enjoy almost perfect weather year-round, with the rainiest months from October to early December.
Rainy Season in Colombia
Colombia’s rainy seasons generally occur in April, May, October, and November. The heaviest rains usually fall in the latter two months. If you’re planning to visit Bogotá, prepare for its unique, year-round rainy microclimate, with drier conditions from December to February.
Best Time to Visit Colombia
Any time is a great time to visit Colombia, as long as you don’t mind a bit of rain! Let’s recap: Bogotá is cool and rainy but dries up from December to February. Medellín is pleasant year-round, especially from November to March and June to September. Cartagena is sunny except in May and October. For Amazon adventures, choose March to November for drier conditions. And for whale watching on the Pacific coast, July to October is prime time!
