Central Cemetery of Bogota – Bogotá’s Hidden Gem: A Journey Through Central Cemetery

Hi there! I’m Nicholas, an American living in Colombia. Today, I want to take you on a tour of the Central Cemetery of Bogotá, a place brimming with history and mystery. Let’s uncover the secrets of this fascinating site together!

Central Cemetery of Bogota

The Grand Entrance

Commissioned by General Santander and inspired by the old “La Pepita” cemetery near Sabana station, the Central Cemetery opened in 1832. Initially, it wasn’t popular among the wealthy, who preferred church burials. However, it has since become a prestigious final resting place.

Famous Residents

The cemetery now houses many of Colombia’s historic figures, primarily around the central pathway. Its main section, shaped like an ellipse, is surrounded by a maze of niches and tombs, depicting the country’s tumultuous political and social history.

Notable Burials

  • Virgilio Barco Vargas: Former President, with a majestic black granite mausoleum.
  • Santander: A pivotal figure in Latin American liberation, originally buried elsewhere before returning to the cemetery.
  • José Raquel Mercado: A symbol of democracy and unionism, tragically kidnapped and murdered.
  • Rafael Uribe Uribe: A liberal movement icon, his tomb is adorned with a striking eagle sculpture.
  • Leo S. Kopp: Founder of Bavaria brewery, his tomb is a site of pilgrimage and wishes.
  • The Bodmer Sisters: Mysterious figures whose tomb has become a place of offerings and wishes.

Leo S. Kopp’s Legacy

Leo S. Kopp, a benevolent businessman, is revered for improving his workers’ lives. His tomb, featuring a Rodin’s Thinker statue, is a popular spot for locals to whisper their wishes for prosperity. Nearby, a white marble mausoleum houses his family.
